Hello,

This is Real Swim Academy, SWIMENJOYAHN.

I'll be writing the second post for today, which is a rare occurrence for me to do two posts in one day. This time, I'll be focusing on health and swimming, specifically addressing issues related to discs.

Since I currently have a disc condition myself, this is an area of particular interest to me.

So, let's get started with the post titled:

Firstly, let's understand what a disc is:

A disc is a rubbery pad located between each gap in the spine. Each disc maintains the space between the vertebrae and absorbs shock. The outer part of the disc is composed of tough fibers, while the inner part is filled with a gel-like substance. These discs provide flexibility and absorption functions to support and protect the spine.

The structure of a disc can be broadly divided into three parts:

  1. Outer fibrous ring: Surrounds the disc and maintains its shape, preventing the gel-like substance inside from escaping.
  2. Annulus fibrosus: A grid-like structure within the fibrous ring that supports the disc and maintains the internal material.
  3. Gel-like inner substance (nucleus pulposus): Fills the central part of the disc, absorbing shock and providing flexibility during disc movement.

Discs endure pressure during routine activities, and irregular movements or excessive weight-bearing can increase the pressure. In such situations, discs may be damaged, and issues like disc herniation (disc protrusion from its space) or disc rupture may occur, leading to pain, nerve compression, and various symptoms.

Now, let's explore why swimming is beneficial for discs:

Disc (disc herniation or disc herniated) is a condition where the rubbery pad between the spinal discs protrudes or ruptures, causing pressure on adjacent nerves. While swimming can offer advantages for some disc-related issues, caution may be needed depending on individual circumstances.

Benefits of resistance exercises: As water provides resistance to the body, swimming can assist in strengthening muscles related to disc issues. Specifically, it helps reinforce back and abdominal muscles, providing support and stabilization to the spine.

Joint and spine pressure relief: Exercising in water reduces the pressure on joints, potentially alleviating discomfort or pain related to disc issues.

Aerobic exercise benefits: Swimming is a form of aerobic exercise that enhances cardiovascular function and aids in weight management, contributing to the relief of disc-related problems.

Stress reduction: The buoyancy of water provides comfort to the body and helps relieve stress. As disc-related pain is often associated with stress, swimming can be beneficial in alleviating it.

However, for severe disc issues or specific situations, physical therapy or other forms of exercise may be more suitable. Above all, it's crucial to select appropriate exercises based on individual health conditions and follow the guidance of a doctor or specialist. If you have disc-related problems, consulting with a healthcare professional or expert is recommended, as their advice takes precedence over self-judgment.

I always emphasize the importance of consulting with professionals rather than suggesting that anything is universally beneficial. Choosing the right exercises through consultation with experts is crucial.
